Gloucestershire (abbreviated Glos.) is a county in the southwest of England. The county comprises part of the Cotswold Hills, part of the flat fertile valley of the River Severn, and the entire Forest of Dean on the west side of the River Severn.

The county town is the city of Gloucester, and other principal towns include Cheltenham, Cirencester, Stroud, and Tewkesbury.

When considered as a ceremonial county, Gloucestershire borders the county of Gwent in Wales (now Monmouthshire) to the west, and in England the ceremonial counties of Herefordshire to the northwest, Worcestershire to the north, Warwickshire to the northeast, Oxfordshire to the east, Wiltshire to the south and Bristol and Somerset to the southwest. Ceremonially, it includes the area covered by the South Gloucestershire District which is a unitary authority.

The official former postal county abbreviation was "Glos.", rather than the frequently used but erroneous "Gloucs." or "Glouc.".

Governance

Gloucestershire is a historic county mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in the 10th century, though the areas of Winchcombe and the Forest of Dean were not added until the late 11th century.

Gloucestershire originally included Bristol, then a small town. The "local" rural community moved to the port city, (as Bristol was to become) and Bristol's population growth accelerated during the industrial revolution. Bristol became a county in its own right, separate from Gloucestershire and Somerset in 1373. From 1974 until 1996 it became the principal part of the administrative County of Avon.

Upon the abolition of Avon in 1996, the region north of Bristol became a unitary authority area named South Gloucestershire. South Gloucestershire is now part of the ceremonial county of Gloucestershire.

The remainder of Gloucester has been divided, since 1974, into six Districts still under the ultimate control of the Gloucestershire County Council. This is a sizeable reduction from the five county and municipal boroughs, six urban districts and fifteen rural districts in existence immediately prior to that date. The districts are as follows:

2. Tewkesbury District
3. Cheltenham District
4. Cotswold District
5. Stroud District
6. Forest of Dean District
7. South Gloucestershire District

Gloucester, Tewkesbury, Cheltenham and Stroud Districts are based on towns (or city in the case of Gloucester) but also include the rural areas surrounding them. Cotswold, Forest of Dean and South Gloucestershire Districts are more general geographic descriptions of mixed rural and urban areas.
