Oxfordshire (formerly abbreviated Oxon) is a county in southeast England bordering on Warwickshire (to the north/northwest), Northamptonshire (to the north/northeast), Buckinghamshire (to the east), Berkshire (to the south), Wiltshire (to the southwest) and Gloucestershire (to the west).

The main centre of population is the city of Oxford. Other significant settlements are Banbury, Bicester, Kidlington and Chipping Norton to the north of Oxford; Carterton and Witney to the west; Thame and Chinnor to the east; and Abingdon, Wantage, Didcot, Wallingford and Henley on Thames to the south.

The county has major education and tourist industries and is noted for the concentration of performance motorsport companies and facilities. Oxford University Press is the largest firm among a concentration of print and publishing firms; the University of Oxford is also linked to the concentration of local biotechnology companies.

In 1974 the Vale of White Horse and parts of the South Oxfordshire administrative districts south of the River Thames, which had historically been part of Berkshire, were added to the County of Oxfordshire. At the same time, the Caversham area of Reading was transferred to Berkshire from Oxfordshire and the parish of Stokenchurch was transferred to Buckinghamshire.

At earlier dates there were a number of detached parishes of Oxford in Buckinghamshire and vice versa. One that was transferred to Buckinghamshire in 1844 was Lillingstone Lovell. In 1896 the parish of Lewknor Uphill was abolished and became part of the parish of Fingest in Buckinghamshire. These two places are marked on the expansion of the map in the upper right hand corner of this page and rightfully appear to be out of the confines of the county of Oxfordshire.

Research Tips

  • The Victoria County History of Oxfordshire is part of the website of British History Online. This series of county histories was begun at the beginning of the 20th century, but the Oxfordshire one is newer than most and is, unfortunately, as yet incomplete. The organization of the county histories is based on the ancient divisions called "hundreds" and presents essays on each of the parishes within the hundred. The essays describe many characteristics of the parishes and are particularly strong on the ownership of land, going back to the "manors" of feudal times and progressing through the owners, usually to the 19th century. Links to the individual essays are made within the parish research tips. The introductory chapter on each Hundred often contains a very worthwhile map.
  • As of October 2016 Oxfordshire Church of England parish records are on Ancestry. The datasets are:
  • Oxfordshire, England, Church of England Deaths and Burials, 1813-1965, 318,434 records
  • Oxfordshire, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1930, 599,320 records
  • Oxfordshire, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1915, 1,250,642 records
  • Oxfordshire, England, Church of England Baptism, Marriages, and Burials, 1538-1812, 1,932,157 records.
