Robert Hutchinson was baptised on 16th October 1825 at Richmond in Yorkshire, son of a labourer and coachsmith named William Hutchinson and his wife Jane. By the time of the 1841 census his parents had left Richmond and moved to the city of Durham. However, Robert stayed behind in Richmond, where he appears in the 1841 census serving as an apprentice paper maker.
In 1844 Robert married an Ann Veal at Richmond. Between 1845 and 1856 they had eight children together, although two of them died as infants. The family moved around at first, having their first child in Richmond, then moving to Jarrow for their second, back to Richmond for the third and finally to Sunderland, where they settled.
Ann died in 1859, aged 34. Robert was therefore left with six children to look after.
The following year, Robert married again. His second wife was Mary Stewart Glenny, who was originally from Stirlingshire in Scotland, but had moved south with her family as a child. Between 1861 and 1869 they had five children. However, Mary died either in childbirth with the fifth or immediately afterwards - and the boy only outlived his mother by a couple of days. Robert was therefore a widower for the second time at the age of 43.
Just under two years later, in the 1871 census Robert was living with a Mary McDonald. She was 22 years his junior. They were not married at the time of the census, but she was described as his wife nonetheless. They had two sons together before they did marry, although both died young. Robert and Mary McDonald finally married in 1873. After their marriage they had another four sons, although one of them died young too.
Robert died in 1893. He was 67 years old. It is not clear what happened to Mary.
