Robert Hutchinson was born in 1850 at Sunderland in County Durham, son of Ann Hutchinson, formerly Veal, and her husband Robert Hutchinson, a paper maker. Young Robert appears in the 1851 census living at Hill Field in Sunderland with his parents and siblings.
In 1859, when Robert was nine years old, his mother Ann died. The following year his father married again. Robert appears in the 1861 census living with his father and stepmother at Walker Street in Sunderland. He has yet to be researched after 1861.
