Henry Hutchinson was baptised on 19th January 1845 at Richmond in Yorkshire, eldest son of Ann Hutchinson, formerly Veal, and her husband Robert Hutchinson, a paper maker. By the time of the 1851 census, Henry's parents had moved a few miles away to the town of Sunderland, but Henry was still living in Richmond with his maternal grandparents.

Henry's mother Ann died in 1859, when Henry was 14 years old. His father remarried the following year. The 1861 census finds Henry living with his father and stepmother in Sunderland. Henry was following his father's trade, also working as a paper maker. He has yet to be researched after 1861.
