William Hutchinson was baptised on 7th October 1848 at Richmond in Yorkshire, son of Ann Hutchinson, formerly Veal, and her husband Robert Hutchinson, a paper maker. By the time of the 1851 census the family had moved a few miles north to the large town of Sunderland. When William was eleven years old, his mother Ann died. His father married again in 1860. The 1861 census finds William living with his father, stepmother and siblings in Sunderland. He has yet to be researched after 1861.
