Ann Veal was born in about 1825 at Richmond in Yorkshire, daughter of a gardener named William Veal and his wife Ann. Ann appears in the 1841 census living with her parents at Pottergate in the town.

In 1844, aged about 19, Ann married a paper maker called Robert Hutchinson. He was a couple of years older than her, and also from Richmond. For the first few years of their marriage they moved about a bit. Their first child, Henry, was born in Richmond in 1845. They then moved to Jarrow in County Durham where their second child, John, was born in 1847. They returned to Richmond for their third child, William, in 1848. Finally, some time between 1848 and 1850, they moved to Sunderland in County Durham, where the had another five children between 1850 and 1856. After moving to Sunderland, they did retain contact with the family in Richmond; on the night of the 1851 census Ann's eldest son Henry was staying with his maternal grandparents in Richmond. Of Ann and Robert's eight children, two died as infants.

Ann died in 1859, aged 34. She was buried at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery in Sunderland on 11th November 1859. Robert was left looking after their six surviving children, who were aged between fourteen and about three years old when their mother died. He remarried the following year.
