Mary McDonald was born in 1847 at Sunderland in County Durham. She was the daughter of a ship yard labourer named Francis McDonald and his wife Jane. Mary appears in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses living at home with her parents and siblings in Sunderland.
In the 1871 census, Mary appears living with a paper maker named Robert Hutchinson, who was a widower twice over and 22 years her senior. Mary was described as Mary Hutchinson and recorded as his wife, although they were not yet married. In fact they had two sons together before they married, although sadly both died as infants. Mary did eventually marry Robert in 1873. All together, Mary and Robert had six sons together, although only three of them survived infancy. In the 1881 census Mary and Robert were living with two of their sons, some of his children from his previous wife and Mary's sister Esther. In the 1891 census Mary and Robert were living in Sunderland with the three children they had together who survived infancy.
Robert died in 1893, aged 67. Mary has yet to be traced after the 1891 census.
