Robert James Hutchinson was baptised on 19th May 1875 at Deptford Chapel in the parish of Bishopwearmouth and town of Sunderland, County Durham. He was the son of Mary Hutchinson, formerly McDonald, and her husband Robert Hutchinson, a paper maker. Young Robert appears in both the 1881 and 1891 censuses living with his parents and siblings in Sunderland. He has yet to be researched after 1891.
