Jane Hutchinson was born in late 1840 or early 1841 in the city of Durham. She was the daughter of a labourer and coachsmith named William Hutchinson and his wife Jane. Young Jane appears in the 1841 census living at Grape Lane off Crossgate, on the west side of Durham, with her parents and siblings. She was baptised at nearby St Margaret's Church on 16th September 1842. She appears in the 1851 census as a scholar living with her parents and siblings at Crossgate. She has yet to be researched after 1851.
