Mary Jane Hutchinson was born in about 1864 at Sunderland in County Durham, daughter of Mary Hutchinson, formerly Glenny, and her husband Robert Hutchinson, both of whom worked in the paper making industry. In 1869, when Mary Jane was about five years old, her mother died. The 1871 census finds Mary Jane living with her father, siblings and a lady called Mary who was already described as Robert's wife even though they did not actually marry until 1873.

Mary Jane has yet to be researched after 1871.
