Mary Stewart Glenny was born on 12th May 1833 at Denny in Stirlingshire, Scotland, daughter of Mary Glenny, formerly Stewart, and her husband Alexander Glenny, a paper maker. After Mary's birth the family moved away from Stirlingshire, with siblings born in Edinburgh in 1837 and then Lasswade in Midlothian in 1839. The family appears at Lasswade in the 1841 census. Some time in the mid 1840s the family left Scotland and moved to England, living at Warden, just outside the town of Hexham in Northumberland. Mary appears there with her parents and siblings in the 1851 census working as a paper sorter - indeed her whole family seems to have been working in the paper making industry.

Mary was married in 1860 to a widower named Robert Hutchinson. Like her father, he was a paper maker. They were married at Monkwearmouth in Sunderland, County Durham. Robert had six surviving children from his first marriage. The 1861 census finds Mary and Robert and his children living at Walker Street in the Deptford area of Bishopwearmouth parish in Sunderland. During the 1860s Mary had five children with Robert.

Mary died in 1869, aged 36, either in childbirth with her fifth child, William, or shortly afterwards. He was baptised on 14th July and she was buried six days later at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery in Sunderland on 20th July 1869. Baby William only outlived his mother by a couple of days, being buried on 28th July.

After Mary's death, Robert married for a third time four years later.
