Frome Rural District was located in Somerset, England, from 1894 to 1974. It was created in 1894 under the Local Government Act 1894.

The district covered more than 30 parishes surrounding the urban district of Frome. Its total area was over 51,000 acres (200km2). It was bounded on the northwest and north by the rural districts of Clutton and Bath, on the east by the county of Wiltshire, on the south and southwest by the rural districts of Wincanton and Shepton Mallet and on the west by the urban districts of Radstock, (R), and Midsomer Norton, (MN). It can be found on the right edge of the the Ordnance Survey Map of Somerset of 1900. During the 80 years of its existence there were various alterations to the composition of the district. Some parishes merged; others were formed out of the parishes of the original group. Brief notes are given below.

In 1974 it was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972 when it became part of the non-metropolitan Mendip District.

  • The Somerset Heritage Centre (incorporating what was formerly the Somerset Record Office and the Somerset Local Studies Library) can be found at its new location at Langford Mead in Taunton. It has an online search facility leading to pages of interest, including maps from the First and Second Ordnance Survey (select "Maps and Postcards" from the list at the left, then enter the parish in the search box).

  • Three maps on the A Vision of Britain through Time website illustrate the changes in political boundaries over the period 1830-1945. All have expanding scales and on the second and third this facility is sufficient that individual parishes can be inspected.
