Joseph Gobby was born on 7th November 1817 at Toddington in Bedfordshire, the son of Ann Gobby, formerly Dennis, and her husband Thomas Gobby.
Aged 22, he married a straw plaiter named Mary Ann Buckingham, who was 18. Between 1840 and 1863 the couple had thirteen children, although four of those died young - indeed, they had three sons named Joseph and two daughters named Emma.
Joseph appears in each census between 1841 and 1871 with his wife and various children, living mostly at Parsons End or Parsonage End in Toddington. He worked as an agricultural labourer and gardener. In 1851 he also had living with him two nephews - the sons of his sister Esther, who had died a couple of years earlier.
Mary Ann died in 1880, aged 58. Joseph outlived her by nine years and died aged 71 in 1889.
