Joseph Gobby was born in 1852 at Toddington in Bedfordshire, son of a straw plaiter named Mary Ann Gobby, formerly Buckingham, and her husband Joseph Gobby, an agricultural labourer. Joseph was the couple's third son named Joseph - the other two having died as babies.

Joseph appears living with his parents and siblings in the 1861 census living at Parsonage End. Although only nine years old, he was already working as an agricultural labourer.

Joseph has yet to be researched after the 1861 census.
