Joseph Gobby was baptised on 9th April 1851 at Toddington in Bedfordshire, son of a straw plaiter named Mary Ann Gobby, formerly Buckingham, and her husband Joseph Gobby, an agricultural labourer.

Joseph died as a baby, being buried just a week after his baptism.
