John Gobby was born around 1815 at Toddington in Bedfordshire, son of Ann Gobby, formerly Dennis, and her husband Thomas Gobby, an agricultural labourer. The 1841 census finds John working as a servant for a farmer in the hamlet of Chalton in Toddington parish.

On 6th June 1843, aged about 28, John was married in the neighbouring parish of Sundon to Phoebe Hull. They do not appear to have had any children. The 1851 census finds them living back at Chalton, with John working as an agricultural labourer. Living with them was John's niece Mary, daughter of his sister Esther who had died in 1848. John and Phoebe appear to have brought Mary up; she was still living with them ten years later in the 1861 census, by which time they had moved a short distance to the hamlet of Lewsey in the parish of Luton.

Later in 1861, Mary had a son called John George Gobby. John and Phoebe appear to have brought him up too; the 1871 census finds him living with Phoebe and John at Lewsey after Mary had married and moved out.

Phoebe died in 1879. She was about 58 years old.

The 1881 census finds John still living with his great nephew John George Gobby, who by this time had married and was described both as a wood porter and local Methodist preacher. John was described as John George's father rather than great uncle, indicating that John George had been raised by John and Phoebe.

John died in 1886, aged about 71.

  7. Although no baptism has been found for John, he has been linked to his parents Thomas Gobby and Ann Dennis on the basis that on his marriage certificate he gave his father's name as Thomas Gobby, and in the 1851 and 1861 censuses he had a niece named Mary Gobby living with him, who appears to have daughter of Thomas and Ann's daughter Esther. He also witnessed the marriage of Thomas and Ann's daughter Sarah in 1845.
