Phoebe Hull was baptised on 29th July 1821 at Sundon in Bedfordshire, daughter of Hannah Hull, formerly Hedges, and her husband William Hull, an agricultural labourer. She appears in the 1841 census living with her parents and sister at Upper Sundon.

On 6th June 1843, aged about eighteen, Phoebe was married at Sundon to John Gobby, an agricultural labourer from the neighbouring parish of Toddington. They do not appear to have had any children. The 1851 census finds them living in the hamlet of Chalton in the parish of Toddington. Living with them was John's niece Mary, daughter of his sister Esther who had died in 1848. Phoebe and John appear to have brought Mary up; she was still living with them ten years later in the 1861 census, by which time they had moved a short distance to the hamlet of Lewsey in the parish of Luton.

Later in 1861, Mary had a son called John George Gobby. Phoebe and John appear to have brought him up too; the 1871 census finds him living with Phoebe and John at Lewsey after Mary had married and moved out, and John George would later describe John as his father, rather than great uncle, in the 1881 census.

Phoebe died in 1879. She was about 58 years old.
