Mary Gobby was born on 6th August 1809 at Woburn in Bedfordshire, daughter of Ann Gobby, formerly Dennis, and her husband Thomas Gobby, an agricultural labourer.
When she was 22 years old, Mary married a Scottish tailor named Alexander McKenzie. They married at the church of St James Piccadilly in Westminster, in the western suburbs of London. By 1841 they were living at Upper Ogle Street in Marylebone. They appear to have had ten children together between 1832 and 1855.
By 1851 they had moved to 12 Munster Square in St Pancras. Mary's sister Sarah's daughter Ann Neal was lodging with them at that time. Mary and Alexander stayed at 12 Munster Square for over ten years, also appearing there in the 1861 census.
Alexander died in 1866, aged about 62. Mary survived him by about eighteen months. She died at the age of 58, being buried at St Pancras Cemetery on 24th November 1867.
