Maria Ann Eliza McKenzie was born on 21st February 1848 at Marylebone in Middlesex, a north-western suburb of London. She was the daughter of Mary McKenzie, formerly Gobby, and her husband Alexander McKenzie, a Scottish tailor.

The 1851 and 1861 censuses both find Maria living with her parents and siblings at 12 Munster Square in St Pancras, a northern suburb of London. Maria has yet to be traced after 1861.
