Bible Records: Hicks Bible in possession of Elizabeth (Hicks) Joslin, Georgetown, Ohio August, 1998. [copy sent to me by Lvera Jennings Seipelt, Georgetown OH]. Loose paper in Hicks Bible states "Elijah Hicks was born April 2, 1799; Died July 3 1853. Also: Elijah Hicks Senior died July 3, 1853" Birth: Tombstone (Hicks Bible gives 1797) (1850 census gives 1799) Hicks Bible gives North Carolina as birthplace [I question this -- the photocopy I have does not mention birthplace] Marriage: Bracken Co., Ky Mar. rec.(Elijah Hicks to Nancy "Melville")-- "Bracken Co. Mar. Rec." by DAR (GS# 976.9325, v 25 b); (bk 1, p 53) Bracken Co. mar. bond is dated 28 Feb 1823 (no date given by Hicks Bible) Death: Tombstone, Mt. Pleasant Cem.; administration papers dated 19 Aug 1853; they are in Clermont Co, Ohio. Census: 1830: Clermont Co., Ohio This census lists Elijah, a wife, 2 sons, and 2 daughters. All are in age groups consistent with birthdates given by the Hicks Bible. 1840: Clermont Co., Ohio; Elijah HICKS: age: 40-50; wife age: 30-40 (Nancy, b. 1806); 3-Sons age: 0-5 (James; Elijah; 1 other male); 4-Sons age: 5-10 (Joshua; 3 other males); 1-Son age: 15-20 (John, b. 1824); 3-Daughters age: 0-5 (Martha; 2 other females); 4-Daughters age: 5-10 (Nancy; 3 other females); 1-Daughter age: 15-20 (1 other female) Henry b. June 1826; Mary b. 1827; Elizabeth b. 1829 are not listed in their correct age groups. Allowing for this, there are still 3 extra males and 4 extra females. They may be the children of Elijah's brother, Henry (shown with no wife or children in the 1840 census) (See also HICKS NOTES p. 5-6) 1850: Franklin Twp., Clermont, Ohio (#l774) Elijah HICKS 51 M Bricklayer (500) NC; Nancy 44 F MD; John 25 M Farmer OH; Henry M. 24 M Bricklayer OH; Joshua 17 M Laborer OH; James 14 M OH; Elijah 12 M OH; Martha 11 F OH; William 8 M OH; Erastus 5 M OH; George W. 3 M OH; James White 19 (laborer). 1860, 1870 census rec. see Nancy HICKS, a widow after 1853 Land: 1832: Elihah HICKS & John TATMAN (apparently his brother-in-law) bought 190 acres. 1836: Elijah HICKS & John TATMAN deeded 105 acres back & forth (apparently to clear title) 1836: Elijah HICKS sold 2.5 acres to Alex JOHNSTON (apparently another brother-in-law) 1841: (17 SEP) Elijah & Nancy HICKS sell 81.5 acres to David FEE in Survey 964 for $800.00 1842: (26 APR) Elijah HICKS to Charles RICE, 5.5 acres (sources: first 3 from HICKS NOTES (Orville Jones); last 2 from Behyemer (a researcher hired by Norman Zezula). All are Clermont Co. transactions. WILL: Clermont Co, OH Book A1:44. 8 Aug 1853. The following is a schedule of property and C? [Chattel?] belonging to the estate of Elijah HICKS, deceased, set off by the undersigned for support of Nancy HICKS, widow, and Martha Ann HICKS, Joshua HICKS, William HICKS, E.M.P. HICKS and George W. HICKS and C.R.J. HICKS, his minor children: 12 hogs worth $20.00; 2.5 acres corn 15.00; potato patch 3.00; 1 stand bees 4.00 We certify that there is no other personal property of a suitable kind to set of to the widow and children, and that the further sum of $408.00 is necessary for their support, and we allow the same out of any moneys or property belonging to said estate.
