Facts and Events
All information from Norman Zezula M. 20 Sep 1840 to Nelson Newkirk !BIRTH:Census records of Clermont Co., Ohio (1820-1840; with her parents) and comparison with the known data for the rest of Joshua Hicks children led to this birth year estimate. Her name was determined from the Cler. Co. mar. rec. (v 3, p 233). The fact that she was a daughter of Joshua Hicks and Diana Adams was established by the listing of Diana Hicks (Joshua's widow) with the Nelson Newkirk family in the 1850 census--("Diana Hicks, age 82, b. VA; identified as Nelson's mother-in-law"--Tate twp., Cler., OH; # 1167). Nelson is living with his second wife, Nancy (Hicks) Newkirk having d. in 1847. !MARRIAGE: Cler. Co., OH mar. rec. William D. was also in Co. H, 59 OVI; He got a disability discharge (pension papers). He married In Illinois and had 4 daughters. One of these, Cora Johnston was still living in Ottumwa Iowa on 23 Oct 1974 (age 90 years). Orville Jones corresponded with her on that date, and obtained the above information from her. She has never heard of "Harriet" [sic] (prob. means "Hannah"), the 3rd child of Nelson NEWKIRK and Nancy HICKS. The William D. NEWKIRK Bible does not mention her. She may have married or died in Clermont Co. prior to 1866. (Orville Jones Notes, p 30) |
