!BIRTH:

 1850-1880 census records (1850: Newport, Campbell, Ky.; p 2, #27;
 1860: Elbridge Twp., Edgar, Illinois; p 134, #964; 1870: ibid.--p 17, #129; 1880: ibid. p 22, #199). Analysis of parent's 1820-1830 census rec. of Cler. Co., OH and Cler. Co. land transactions (in which Joshua and and Diana Hicks sell Joshua Jr. 73.5 acres in 1840, and Joshua Jr., his wife, and Diana Hicks--prob. as Joshua's survivor--sell the same parcel).--Cler. Co. Deeds; "Orville Jones Notes."

!MARRIAGE: to Sarah Ann (see above land transaction); probably md. in 1844 (since birth of first known child was 1845).

!DEATH: He is in the 1880 census; he does not appear with his wife and family in the 1900 census (wife marked "widow")--Edgar. Co., IL (ED 64, sh 10A; #210)

XDEATH:

CENSUS--1840: Can not locate (probably living with his parents; His father indicates a son in 30-39 age group--which fits Joshua.

CENSUS--1850: In Newport, Campbell, Ky., there is a Joshua HICKS who fits

 the following facts definitely known about him from pre-1850 sources: He fits the age group of a son living with his father, Joshua, in the 1840 Clermont Co., census (he does not appear elsewhere in Ohio or Ky.) His wife, Sarah Ann, is named in the 1845 land sale. This also indicates that they were married before 1845, and implies that they left the area after selling their land in 1845. He is called Joshua HICKS Jr. in 1840 when Joshua and

Diana HICKS sell their land to him (the "Jr." indicates a father, son relationship.) There is no Joshua in the Ohio 1850 census, and no Joshua in the Ky. census fits except for this entry: Campbell Co., KY (p 2; #27) Joshua HICKS 34 M OH [hard to read]

   Sarah 28 F NJ ? [hard to read]
   Wm 5 M OH or NJ? [hard to read]

  "Layfiett" ?         1  M    KY
  Orville Jones wrote (in a 1984 letter to N. Zezula) that he had been

contacted by a Wendell HICKS of Biecher, IL. He is a grandson of Joshua, and had come to the Clermont Co., Genealogical Library seeking information and found Orville's card re. the HICKS line in a "surname reference file." He claimed that Joshua had gone to Edgar Co., Illinois about 1849 "and settled at Elbridge where he ran a store, a sawmill, and farmed." (Note: there is no Joshua HICKS in the Illinois 1850 census index; there is one in the Campbell Co. census as indicated above. However, the same Joshua in Campbell Co. definitely appears in the 1860-1880 censuses for Elbridge, Edgar, Ill.)

CENSUS--1860: Elbridge Twp., Edgar, Illinois (p 134-135; #964)

               influenced by the ages given in other census years.)
