Birth: Hicks Bible; consistent with 1850 census--Fra. twp., Cler., OH (# 1774)--with his parents.

Bible Records: Hicks Bible in possession of Elizabeth (Hicks) Joslin [copy sent to me by Lvera Jennings Seipelt, Georgetown OH]. Loose paper in Hicks Bible states "Elijah Hicks was Born October 22, 1837"

Marriage: Hicks Bible; Mason Co., Ky mar. bond dated 4 Jun 1866 (Elijah Hicks, C. B. Worthington sign--from HIST. OF MAYSVILLE AND MASON CO. (SLC FHL 976.932, H2c; or Film 35623, pt. 9, p 391)

Death: Athens Co., Ohio death rec. "Elijah Hicks Jr., married, age 53y; res. Cler. Co., OH (from "Probate, Athens, OH", p 234)

Military: Elijah was a bodyguard to General Fremont when with Benton's Cadets. He was listed on the original roster of Co. I, 22ond reg., Ohio Inf.( a 3 month Co.) He became a captain, received head wounds from shell splinters at Missionary Ridge (Civil War), and resigned due to this disability. (He was a corporal in Co. I, and a captain in Co. C, 89th OVI) His head wounds led to dizzy spells; he later became violent, and was eventually committed (after 1870) to the state mental hospital in Athens, Ohio where he died.            The 89th OVI was mostly recruited from rural areas of Cler. Co., Highland Co., and Ross Co., Ohio.  It was organized Aug 1862. By Sep 1862, it was sent to W.Virginia to reinforce Gen. Roscrans.  In Sep 1863 it was  involved in the battle of Chikamagua, and later  at Chattanooga, or "Mission Ridge."
