Information from Norman Zezula says he died of starvation in Prison Camp in Richmond, VA Civil War Bible Records: Hicks Bible in possession of Elizabeth (Hicks) Joslin [copy sent to me by Lvera Jennings Seipelt, Georgetown OH]. Loose paper in Hicks Bible states "John Hicks was born October 13, 1824 -- note beside name in different handwriting says barely legible -- see note on death below" Birth: Hicks Bible; consistent with 1850 census--Fra. twp., Cler., OH (#1774) living with parents) Marriage: Probably not married (no indication in Hicks Bible or Clermont Co. or Brown Co. marriage records) (Census records show that in 1850 he lived with his parents; in 1860 he lived with his widowed mother. Death: ROSTER OF OHIO SOLDIERS, 1861-1865. (Hicks Bible states he died in Andersonville Prison, Ga. of starvation "in 1865?" He actually died in rebel prison in Richmond on 28 Dec 1863) Census: 1850 Clermont Co, OH. Elijah Hicks 51; wife Nancy 44; John 25; Henry M. 24; Joshua 17; James 14; Elijah 12; Martha 11; William 8; Erastes M. P. 5; George W. 3; James White 19 (laborer). Military: He enlisted 12 Sep 1861 in Co. A, Ohio Vol. Inf. On 31 Oct 1861, he transferred to Co. C. Subsequently, he was captured and died in rebel prison (reportedly of starvation) on 28 Dec 1863. Apparently, the family harbored long term bitterness over the manner of his death. Laura Behan ZINK related (in 1988) the following incident: Shortly before he died (in 1950), Harvey Henry HICKS (Laura's grandfather) asked her what she intended to name her soon-to-be-born son. She responded that they were considering "Jeffery." "Jeffery?", he said. "Jeffery!" "Thats Jeff! My uncle starved to death in rebel prison under Jeff Davis and ...!" (He became increasingly agitated). Laura named her son "Donald." References
