Vermillion, 31 May 1855 Birth: Hicks Bible; 1900 census--Miami Co., Ohio (v 94, ED 99, sh 4, line 35) is consistent with the family Bible Bible Records: Hicks Bible in possession of Elizabeth (Hicks) Joslin[copy sent to me by Lvera Jennings Seipelt, Georgetown OH]. Loose paper in Hicks Bible states "Martha Hicks was born February 12, 1840 -- note beside name in different handwriting says John Vermillion" Marriage: Cler. Co., Ohio mar. rec. (v 7, p 14) "Martha A. Hicks, 19 + John B. Vermillion, 24" Death: In the 1900 census--Miami Co., Ohio (ED 97, sheet 4, line 33). Census: 1850 Clermont Co, OH. Elijah Hicks 51; wife Nancy 44; John 25; Henry M. 24; Joshua 17; James 14; Elijah 12; Martha 11; William 8; Erastes M. P. 5; George W. 3; James White 19 (laborer). 1860: cannot locate 1870: cannot locate (Try Ohio, Ky., Mo.); other children probable 1880: Clermont Co., Ohio (v 9, ED 40, sh 53, line 45; #328) Martha VERMILLION 39 OH NC MD; Nancy 19 D KY KY OH; U. S. Grant 14 S OH KY OH; Edgar N. 10 S OH KY OH; John C. 9 S OH KY OH; Charles 3 S MO KY OH (census indicates divorce; they appear to live next door to her brother, Henry M. Hicks) 1900: Piqua City, Miami, Ohio (v 109, ED 97, sh 4, line 33; #330) Martha VERMILLION Feb 1840 OH; John C. Aug 1870 son Missouri [sic]; Charles H. Oct 1877 son Missouri; (The census lists her as married 45 years, not as widowed or divorced. This supports the belief that they were separated. It also states that Martha had 8 children; 6 are still alive) Note: Hicks Bible extract has "Maysville, Ky." written below Martha Hicks; "Vermillion" indicated as her husband. 2do: Try 1910 census indexes for Ohio, Ky. Mo. Ind., etc. for Martha, Edgar, John C., and U S Grant (or Grant, or Ulysses) VERMILLION Try 1900 census indexes for Ohio to find U S Grant & Edgar Vermillion (1866 & 1870); Try Mo. or Ky. or Ind. 1900 census index for John B. Vermillion (b abt 1840 or bef). Also check Platt City, Mo. for birth of Charles Vermillion in 1877) Also, 3 other children are probable based on statement made in 1900 census (8 children, 6 living). Prob. b. between 1855-1870 Look for possible divorce bef 1880 (in Piqua, Mo., or Cler. Co., OH) References
