The second child & 2nd son of Noah & Katherine Webster was born in 1730 in Lebanon,CT, married at Sheffield, MA to Hannah Vosburgh in 1754. He served in the French & Indian War, went out of Sheffield in a Hampshire County Regt. under Maj.John Ashley, to Ft.Howard in 1757, for the relief of Ft. William. In 1760, they moved to Egremont, MA & about 1767 removed into New York State, to Chatham in Columbia county (just across the state line).
Daniel would have been 45 when the Revolution broke out. I was surprised to find nothing in the Genealogy of his serving in the war. I checked at the Federal Archives & there are a dozen Daniel Websters' in the Rev War records. Only one enlisted in a New York regiment, the 17th Reg of the NY Line, so I feel this is our Daniel. He served from May to Oct of 1775 at Ft. George. The DAR Patriot Index has our Daniel in its records. The reference is p.239 of 'New York in the Revolution', with one place showing him a private, another a corporal. This info is on the 1957 application to the DAR (457025) of Clare Austin Warren, daughter of Carrie Ella Webster, who is daughter of George Waugh Webster, who was son of Warren, who was son of Stephen, who was son of this Daniel who fought in the War for 6mos. The accepted authority for the authencity of her lineage is the Webster Genealogy.
Daniel died near Lee Centre, NY in Oneida County and is buried in Hall Cemetery, NW of the village about 2 miles. His tombstone inscription: "Daniel Webster died Sep 22 1813, aged 82 yrs. A convert at the age of sixteen under Whitfield's preaching." He is buried with his son, David, and 6 grandchildren. Hannah is not listed at that cemetery.?? No will was cited in the Genealogy.
1790 New York Census Index has two Daniel Webster's in Columbia County in NY; one in Canaan or one in Hilldale. Either could be this 60yr old Daniel & 54yr old Hannah.
1800 New York Census Index for Oneida County p.172 -Daniel Webster household has: 16-26 male(none of chldrn are this young; poss a grandchild or servant?); over 45 male(Daniel is 70yrs); 10-16 female(either a grandchild or a servant); over 45 female(Hannah is 64yrs).
Several genealogies posted on the internet show another child for Daniel & Hannah Webster. A girl, Catharine, b.abt.1766 who married Abner Hubbard in 1784 in Concord, NY. There is no mention of this child in the Webster Genealogy. The source is the IGI (extractions) listing of several children, some with the same names, all being christened in Egremont on same date of 7 Apr 1771, parents listed as Daniel & Hannah Webster. Is this our Daniel & Hannah? or some other couple named Webster?? Several arguments pro & con. I think Daniel had already left Edgemont by 1871 & these children belong to another Daniel & Hannah.
Daniel's children are continued in Chapter 12 p.288.
