Catharine is the daughter of Deacon John & Alice (Lombard)Newcomb, b.1710 in Lebanon, CT. John Newcomb(b.1688) is from a distinguished line, originally from Saltfleet, Lincoln, England. He and Alice were early settlers of Lebanon, joining the Second Society (a church, of which he was a deacon) in 1718. He was active in all the affairs of the city. Tradition says that John Newcomb at age 72yrs (1760) made a trip to Nova Scotia in order to investigate conditions there. He was so favorably impressed with the country that he returned to CT and immediately began prepartations for removing his family to Nova Scotia. A large number of the Newcomb family moved there and immediately began organizing the town that would be Cornwallis.
