IntroductionI have been researching my family history and genealogy for over 35+ years. I have spent much time researching and documenting my mother's ancestry, most of which is concentrated in Eastern Tennessee, Virginia (primarily Orange, Augusta and Rockbridge Counties), Pennsylvania (Lancaster and Chester Counties), Tennessee (Washington, Greene, Roane and Knox Counties) and my father's ancestry in Indiana, Germany, Germanna Colony (Culpeper County, VA), New York (Oyster Bay, Dutchess, Putnam and Westchester Counties) and Lancaster and Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. I am a member of the Mayflower Descendants, California Chapter. I have 6 lines to Mayflower Ancestors (1 documented for membership) to Stephen Hopkins, William Brewster and John Howland. I have one additional Mayflower line through Phoebe3 Dickinson (Samuel2, John1), to John Howland that has not yet been proven by the Society of Mayflower Descendants and still must have more documentation before it can be accepted (see "Brick Walls" below).
AdvisoriesOn most of my contributions on ancestor's pages at WeRelate.org, I've added a copy of my file's one-generation genealogy report and notes, including some documentation and a listing of sources (some secondary). If you have proven information that contradicts information listed or have additional information on the lines listed below, please e-mail me (Delijim@aol.com) and we'll compare notes. If you would like a copy of a multi-generation genealogy report, e-mail me and I'll be glad to share it with you. I am not necessarily related to every person or family just because I've added information to them on WeRelate.org. Some are included in projects that I am working on in certain geographical areas, such as the "Early Settlers of Augusta County, Virginia." I include information and sources (some secondary) to help other researchers, and some include a substantial amount of information that other reseachers have generously e-mailed or shared with me. I believe that in addition to the quest to get information, genealogists and family historians should equally do something that they can to share information to further the research and knowledge of others. Please support and help free genealogy prosper by sharing your records and/or research -- if you can't put it online, find someone who can. If you feel that some information included was from a source that may be copyrighted, please e-mail me and I will review it for deletion. Please keep in mind that "facts" can't be copyrighted, and no-one has exclusive ownership over the information on their ancestors. It is for all of us to share together. Being selfish with records and information will only make it more difficult for us all to find the "truth" about our ancestors. Although on some pages, I've added substantial narrative and information that some would consider copyrighted, feel free to use this information and narrative for your own research. If you post this information elsewhere, I would appreciate it if you would at least list the source of where you found this information. Remember that a "rising tide lifts all boats"; be willing to share information and records with others, it's the "right thing" to do. Note: my research does contain "secondary" information, gathered from others. While I've tried to be as "error-free" as possible in adding information, I'm sure some information may contain errors. My goal is to have the "most accurate" information possible on these pages, and hopefully not have the "error-prone" information that has plagued other genealogical sites across the internet. If you have information that you feel could correct or add to information contained on WeRelate, please e-mail it to me, including the sources of the information. Thanks:) __________________________
Note About Augusta County, VA RecordsAlthough we are highly indebted to Lyman Chalkley for his transcriptions of Augusta County, Virginia records, it should be noted that there are some records that are missing from Chalkley's or from the archives in early Augusta County, especially some deeds that appear to be missing during the years 1746 and 1747. Some researchers have based their version of relationships based solely upon what is included in Chalkley's Vol. 3, which includes most wills and deeds, but there are other records included in Volumes 1 & 2 that have been extremely useful to clarify many relationships in several families of early Augusta County. It is important when looking at records of those families in Augusta County to look at all of the records available in Augusta County, and also those located in Orange County, Virginia (the predecessor county of Augusta), prior to late 1745. On many of the early settlers of Augusta County, I have included as many records available, in order to show a complete picture of them and their families. Hopefully, other researchers will find this information useful in proving and/or disproving certain assumptions that have been made in the past. Need additional information on Walter Conway (b. 1810, Ireland) and his wife Mary (b. 1825, Ireland). They lived in Richmond Indiana, where Walter supposedly died. Their daughter Bridget Conway married Heinrich Wilhelm Veregge (1838-1901) as his second wife, would appreciate any additional information on this Conway family. Need documentation on family of Samuel Dickinson (John1), (b. 1664/65, Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York, d. 1728), grandson of John Howland, Mayflower Passenger. Samuel Dickinson had children in Dutchess County, New York, and unfortunately, few records are available to prove his children and no will had been found. My line to Samuel is through his daughter, Phoebe Dickinson, who married Charles Townsend in Dutchess/Putnam County, New York. Information is also lacking on this family in Dutchess/Putnam County, New York. Additional information, especially proven records of this family would be appreciated by all descendants that would be eligible for membership into the Society of Mayflower Descendants, if this line could be documented. Who are the parents of Andrew R. Lowe (b. abt. 1760 in Maryland, d. 1838 in Bledsoe County, Tennessee). It is suspected that Andrew is the younger brother of Jacob Lowe (1748-1796) of Frederick County, Maryland. More research is needed to find his parents. Who are the parents of William Mabry (b. abt. 1770, d. aft. 1850 in Roane County, Tennessee) It is highly suspected that he is a son of Isaac Mabry/Mabury (b. bef. 1729, prob. North Carolina, d. 1798). More research is necessary to prove this relationship. Who are the parents of William Scarborough (b. bef 1648, d. 1676/7, Surry County, Virginia). William married Amy (widow of Walter Holdsworth) hanged for part in Bacon's Rebellion 16 March 1677. Old family charts with no documentation report him to be a first cousin to Sir Charles Scarborough These charts suggest William to be the son of either Henry, jr., Samuel, or John Scarborough. These three and Edmond (Bapt. 1584 England - Died 1634 Virginia), father of Charles, are shown as sons of Henry Skarborowgh (Scarborough) of North Walsham, County Norfolk, England [Baptised 21 January 1565 - Died 24 August 1617] and Mary Huberstone of Loddon, County Norfolk, England. Who are the parents of Hannah Smalley? (b. bef. 1724, prob. in Massachusetts, d. 1811 in Fredericksburg, Putnam County, New York), she was the 2nd wife of Elisha Cole II. There are numerous posting throughout the internet claiming that she was either the daughter of Joseph Small/Smalley and Mercy Young (parents of Elisha Cole II's first wife, Priscilla), or the daughter of James Smalley and Hannah Bickford. Both claims are incorrect, as those Hannah Smalley's would have been too young to have been the same Hannah Smalley to marry Elisha Cole II. Who are the parents of James Smalley (b. bet 1719-1733 prob. Barnstable County, Massachusetts, d. 1823 in Putnam County, New York), who migrated to Dutchess (later Putnam) County, New York abt. 1745. It is suspected by this researcher that this James Smalley MAY be a brother of Hannah Smalley, listed above. James is NOT the son of James Smalley and Hannah Bickford as has been widely claimed on various internet genealogies in error. More research is necessary. Who is the father of Charles Townsend? Some researchers believe that he was a son of Elihu4 Townsend (Daniel3, Daniel2, John1), while others believe him to be a brother of Elihu Townsend and the son of Daniel3 Townsend (Daniel2, John1). I personally believe that Charles was probably a son of Daniel3 Townsend and am in agreement with Harry Macy. Arguments for both are presented below:
Who are the parents of John Walker (known as "Meadow Creek John Walker"), b. abt. 1740, prob. Virginia, d. aft. 18 Feb. 1796 in Greene County, Tennessee. He married Mary (some say Anderson, but not proven), and they were the parents of Daniel Walker, b. 1761, d. 1834, who married Martha2 Kilgore (Charles1).
