- The Savage Land Grant of Colonial Virginia

Overview
- For their service during the "French & Indian War", Virginia Governor Robert Dinwiddie granted over 27,000 acres to Captain John Savage and fifty-nine other soldiers. This grant became known as the "Savage Land Grant".
- George the Third, by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Kind defender of the faith &, TO ALL to Whom these presents shall come greeting, KNOW YE that for divers good causes and considerations, but more especially for the consideration mentioned in a Proclmation of Robert Dinwiddie, Esquire, late Lieutenant Governor and Commander in Chief of our Colony and Dominion of Virginia, bearing date the 19th day of February, 1754, for encouraging men to enlist in the service of our Late Royal Grandfather for the defence and security of the said Colony, We have given, granted and confirmed, and by these presents for us our heirs and successors do give grant and confirm unto John Savage, Robert Longdon, Robert Tunstall, Edmund Wagener, Richard Trotter, Wire Johnson, Hugh McKoy, Richard Smith, John Smith, Charles Smith, Angus McDonald, Nathan Chapman, Joseph Gatewood, James Samuel, Michael Scully, Edward Goodwin, William Bailey, Henry Bailey, William Cofland, Mathew Doran, John Ramsey, Charles James, Mathew Cox, Marshett Pratt, John Wilson, William Johnson, John Wilson, Nathaniel Barrett, David Gorman, Patrick Galloway, Timothy Conway, Christian Bomgardner, John Houston, John Maid, James Ford, William Borughton, William Carnes, Edward Evans, Thomas Moss, Mathew Jones, Phillip Gatewood, Hugh Paul, Daniel Maples, William Sowry, James Ludlow, James Latrot, James Guinn, Joshua Jordan, William Jenkins, James Commack, Richard Moris, John Gholston, Robert Jones, William Hogan, John Franklin, John Biship, George Matcomb, William Coleman, Richard Bolton, John Kincaid and George Hurst, one certain tract or parcel of land containing 28,627 acres, lying and being in the County of Fincastle and bounded as followeth, towit:
- WITH ALL woods, underwoods, marshes, swamps, lowgrounds, meadows feedings and their due share of all veins, mines, and quarries as well discovered as not discovered within the bounds aforesaid, being a part of the said quantity of 28,627 acres of land and the rivers, waters and water courses therein contained together with all the privileges of hunting, hawking, fishing, fowling, and all other profits and hereditaments to the same or any part thereof belonging,or in any wise appertaining, TO HAVE HOLD possess and enjoy the said tract or parcel of land and all other the before mentioned premises and every part thereof, with their and every of their appurtenances unto the said John Savage (and all the names listed above)..ad their heirs and assignes forever to the only use and behoof to them the said, John Savage (and all the names listed above)......and their heirs and assigns forever, TO BE HELD to us our heirs and successors as of our manor of Estate Greenwich in the County of Kent, in free and common soccage and not in Capite or by Knights service, YIELDING AND PAYING unto us our heirs and successors forevery fifty acres of land and so proportionately for a lesser or greater quantity than fifty acres the fee rent of one shilling yearly to be paid upon the feast day of Sanit Michael the Arch Angel next after 15 years from this date of these presents, and also cultivating and improving three acres part of every fifty of the tract above mentioned within three years after the date of these presents, PROVIDED always that if three years of the said fee rent from and after the expiration of the 15 years aforesaid shall at any time be in arrear and unpaid or if the said John Savage (and all the names listed above) and their heirs do not within the space of three years next coming after the date of these presents cultivate and improve three acres part of every fifth of the tract above mentioned, then the estate hereby granted shall cease and be utterly determined and thereafter it shall and may be lawful to and for us our heirs and successors to grant athe same lands and premises with the appurtenances unto such other persons or person as we our heirs and successors shall think fit: IN WITNESS whereof we have caused these our letters Pattent to be made:
- WITNESS our trusty and welbeloved JOHN EARL OF DUNMORE our Lieutenant and Governor General of our said Colony and Dominion oat Williamsburg under the seal of our said Colony the 15th day of December, 1772, in the 13th year of our Reign.

The Savage Grant was divided into sixty-one (61) separate parcels. Lot 33 lies partly in Wayne County and partly in Cabell County. Lots 34 to 61 (numbered up stream) are in Cabell County (present day)

John Savage never settled on his portion of this land nor did most of the other grantees. Some sold their rights, others lost their right because they did not make improvements or live on the land as required.
Lots 48, 58, 59 and 60 were allotted to Isaac LaRue Tot, the shares of N. A. McCoy.
Parts of the tracts assigned to Robert Tunstall, Robert Langdon, Joshua Jordan, Ed Evans, John Ramsey, Michael Scully and Marshall Pratt were confirmed to John Morrow.
The shares of James Given and Wm. Hogan were assigned to Robert Rutherford, later to John Morrow. Morrow also acquired the share of Mathew Donn and Richard Bolton.
David Spurlock acquired lot 26. Numbers 22 and 25, the shares of Wm. and Henry Bailey were confirmed to Charles Brown of Kanawha county.
The shares of Charles Smith were conveyed to [his son-in-law] Philip Easton and to Horatio Catlett.
The shares of James Ludlow were conveyed to John Poage, that of James Latrol to John Poage, the shares of William Coleman to Achilles Rogers.
The shares of James, Samuel, Hugh, Paul and Robert Jones were confirmed to Henry Hampton and his assignees. The shares of David Gorman were confirmed to Manoah Bostick.
The tract of Richard Trotter was confirmed to Edward McCarty.
