Overview

Shortly after the formation of Augusta County, Virginia, records show the formation of an early "militia" comprised of the "able-bodied men" listed in twelve separate areas, under the command of many of the early leaders of Augusta County. This early Muster List serves as a rough census, showing settlers that lived in specific areas of the County. The lists of Capt. Andrew Lewis, Capt. Samuel Gay and Capt. Hugh Thompson are missing from this record.
