The following person appeared in Orange County, Virginia court on 28 February 1739:

Blairs in Augusta County, Virginia, & Grainger County, Tennessee Introduction "Stretched before us we see a rare and magnificent valley--a paradise." Governor Spotswood's comment upon his group's discovering the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in 1716 proved to be a sentiment shared by many immigrant families. Immigrants came both by boat from abroad and they also traveled south from Pennsylvania and elsewhere on the east coast.
It is James, son of Alexander and Jane Preston Scott Blair, who is believed to be the progenitor of the Blairs in Grainger County, Tennessee. There is no absolute proof that ties that James to our ancestor, James Blair, of Grainger County, Tennessee, but there is some circumstantial evidence, as follows: 1) A James Blair married Kitrin (Irish for Catherine?) King, daughter of Robert King, abt 1755 in Augusta County, Virginia (per the will of Robert King)....our James Blair in Grainger Co., Tennessee, was married to a Catherine. 2 ) Records of an 1806 Augusta County, Virginia, court case involving Alexander Blair's heirs state, "...of these, James Blair has lived a long time in Tennessee or among the Indians of that quarter, and John Blair lives in North Carolina." ....our James Blair lived in Tennessee and received several North Carolina land grants in Tennessee, as early as 1787. Though the records of various Tennessee counties show that several other James Blairs (too many!) lived in eastern Tennessee at the time our James lived in Grainger County, we have thus far found no other James with a wife named Catherine. With these two pieces of information, some Blair family researchers have concluded that the two James Blairs are one and the same. I would add that Hawkins and Grainger County and other county land records do seem to tie the Grainger County Blairs to a Robert King, which is another interesting thing. Could this be a relative to Robert, Kitrin (Catherine) King's father? At this point, having looked at Grainger county records and having viewed the reasoning and research of other researchers, I tend to think the two James Blairs are likely the same man. I feel, though, that more research needs to be done in both Tennessee and Virginia before I'd feel comfortable coming to a definite conclusion. Along with James Blair, several other Blairs appear in the records of Hawkins and Grainger County, Tennessee. On 8 March 1790, Alex Blair, James Blair, and William Blair were listed as voters in Hawkins County. (Note that Grainger County was formed in 1796 from portions of Hawkins and Knox Counties.) Josiah Blair, Robert Blair, and Col. John Blair are also listed in various records. We can identify most of the Blairs found in early land and court records in Hawkins and Grainger counties (sons & grandsons of the original James), but we are not sure yet if Col. John Blair, who lived in another part of the county, was an older son of James or, perhaps, his brother. In any case, James served for a time as an executor to Col. John Blair's estate after Col. Blair died in 1793.

http://kentuckyexplorer.com/nonmembers/00-09070.html Captain James Blair and his wife, Sarah, were residents of Washington Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia. From Record Book No. 2 (1746-1752), it is learned that Mary, wife of Capt. Burdette Ashton, was allotted her one-third of her husband's estate; and in Book No. 3 (1752-1756), James Blair was one of the appraisers of the estate of Mary, widow of Capt. Burdette Ashton (Westmoreland County Records). In Orange County, Virginia (now Augusta), Alexander Blair, on March 24, 1740, entered 300 acres; the fee rent was signed by James Blair; and his family consisted of James, Jane, Mary, and John (Land Book 19, p. 938, Richmond, Virginia). In the militia of Augusta County, 1758, William, John, and James Blair are mentioned (Henings Statues, 7, p. 185-89).
http://blairdna.com/alexander-scott.html Alexander Blair & Jane Scott/Janey James Blair & Catherine “Kitrin” King There has been and continues to be controversy as to whether the James Blair who married Chatherine "Kitrin" King is the son Alexander but there is ongoing research by many folks and developments should be watched. The possibility that this James is the son of Alexander is based on several speculative facts which are presented in the "Blair Society for Genealogical Research Members’ Lineages (1983 - 2003)". The DNA test results from the three participants who believe they descend from Alexander and Jane Scott provide strong evidence that James Blair is in fact the son of Alexander. Two participants (#7277 and #7933 claim to descend from Alexander Blair and Jane Scott through James Blair and Catherine King. They both descend through Josiah Blair, son of Robert and Mary Polly Bean, son of James. A third participant (#66626) descends from Alexander Blair and Jane Scott through John Blair and Jane Robertson. John is a known son of Alexander. All three participants are an exact match on 25 markers. The actual marker values for each participant are shown in the table below. FTDNATiP™ estimates an 80.9% probability that these participants share a common ancestor within 14 transmission events (the number of transmission events between #7277 and #66626). Given the DNA test results and conventional research, it is almost certain that all three participants do descend from Alexander Blair and Jane Scott. The level of confidence would increase if #66626 were to upgrade to 37 markers and continue to match #7933 who has already tested 37 markers. |
