Carol: This is what I have found on Hugh Thompson.

HUGH THOMPSON OF AUGUSTA CO., VIRGINIA

Very little is known about Hugh Thompson, and few references are made to him in the existing records of Augusta County. First mention to be found is in 1742, when Hugh and Samuel Gay were named “among the Captains of Militia for Orange County”. The next mention is the fact that Hugh Thompson was named a Justice of the Peace in 1745.

On 11 February 1745/6 William Thompson sold to James Craig for 30 pounds Virginia currency, a tract of 305 acres on the north side of Middle River, Shenandoe, [next to] Hugh Thompson’s land. Witnesses were Thomas Lewis, Robert Craig and William Thompson [evidently another William, since the seller William, could not witness his own document.]

Since Samuel Gay was a near neighbor of Moses and Adam Thompson, it is thought that Hugh might have been a brother to them. His name is mentioned in conjunction with William Thompson on 9 December 1745, and again, with William and Alexander Thompson on 20 November 1746, and it appears they were all contemporaries. Samuel Gay was part of the group who made their declaration of importation on 24 July 1740 [with Moses Thompson], stating that his family consisted of his wife, Margaret, and sons John and Thomas Gay. Rev. John Craig baptized three additional children after their arrival: Elizabeth Gay, baptized 19 April 1741; Rebecca Gay, baptized 26 Sept 1742; and William Gay, baptized 12 August 1746. Samuel appeared on John Finley’s list of tithables for the Tinkling Spring Church in 1744.

On 8 May 1753 George Scott sold 278 acres on Cathey’s alias Middle River to Andrew Leeper – land was next to that of William Thompson and [at] Hugh Thompson’s corner. Witnesses were Hugh Thompson, Samuel Henderson, and Henry Downes. On 10 Nov 1757, Hugh purchased, for 10 Shillings, 60 acres of land in Augusta County "on a Draft on the S. side of the Land the sd. Thompsons now lives [on]."

Notice is given in the records on 20 May 1760 that “Hugh Thompson has lost his reason, and Bryce Russell and Andrew Leeper are appointed as administrators to take care of his estate”. At this time, the records show that “Hugh Thompson, very aged and infirm, is exempt from Levy”. [Later I will show that both Russell and Leeper appear to have married daughters of Hugh Thompson.]

Brice Russell patented 90 acres of land situated on the Middle River of Shenandoah adjoining "Rankins, Donaho, and his own patent on 25 November 1769. The "Rankins" referred to no doubt is Thomas Rankins, and the "Donaho" refers to Hugh Donaho, who purchased a number of land parcels. On 3 August 1771, for the sum of 10 Shillings, Brice Russell purchased an additional 90 acres of land in Augusta Co., situated on the N. Side of the Middle River of Shanando, adjoining his Patent Land, Rankin, and Donaho.

Andrew Leeper was a son of James and Margaret Leeper [Lepper and Liper in record], who, with his parents and siblings Nicholas, Sarah, Jane, James, Jr., Guine, Isbell and Marie had arrived in Beverley Manor on 28 February 1739. Two more children were born to James and Margaret after they settled in Augusta County, as Rev. Craig baptized a daughter, Margaret, on 19 April 1741, and a son, John, on 22 January 1744. On 25 June 1747, John Smith received 400 acres of land in Augusta Co. on "the South Fork of the North River of Shanando, at the lower end of a Meadow, adj. to James Wood" for the importation of eight persons. Those persons were identified as James Leeper, Margaret Leeper, Nicholas Leeper, Sarah Leeper, James Leeper, Andrew Leeper, James Leeper, and Guine Leeper. [Yes, there were three 'James Leeper's' named.] On the same day, James Leeper purchased for 10 Shillings, 66 acres in Augusta Co. on a Branch of Naked Creek adj. a tract of land belonging to the said James Leeper. He had previously purchased 116 acres in Augusta Co. on a branch of Shenando called Naked Creek, beginning at the top of a hill on the north side of the creek on a ridge. This purchase was made on 12 Jan 1746/47 for 15 Shillings. Hugh Donaho purchased 231 acres of land on Naked Creek on 7 March 1768, this land adjoining Gawan Leeper and his own line.

On 18 February 1762, the Will of Hugh Thompson was presented and proved by one witness, but ‘lies over for further proof’. [I could find no record of further ‘proof’ being presented.] On the 24th of August of that year, Eleanor, widow of Hugh Thompson, asked that the Commissioners lay off and assign to her her dower in said land which James Thompson, heir-at-law, "hath conveyed to Samuel Henderson".

According to information posted by various researchers at Genforum, Hugh married Eleanor Atkinson, and they were the parents of the following children:

1] James - [Adult in 1762, so born before or by 1741] As, apparently, the only son, he was named 'heir-at-law'. 2] Jane Rachel , married Bryce Russell. They are said to have been the parents of nine children, the first four born prior to April 1757. If this is so, then Jane Rachel was probably born circa 1730, and married by 1750. 3] Jean, nothing further known (based upon Hugh Thompson's will and Leeper Family records, it appears that Andrew Leeper married THIS daughter Jean and NOT Elinor) 4] Mary , nothing further known 5] Elinor, said to have married Andrew Leeper. He was born prior to 1739, when he first came with his parents to Virginia. (Note comments on daughter Jean, above, it is doubtful that Elinor married Andrew Leeper).

Thank you so much, June, for replying with all this. I did have a little of that information but I had a few questions. Now it appears that one is answered, I had Eliner the daughter of Hugh and Eleanor, married to an unknown Leeper, and recently after reading a few things, had thought maybe that Andrew Leeper was the spouse of Eliner. I am related to Leepers, Thompsons, Russells, and the Reverend Craig that is mentioned often is Bryce Russell's brother-in-law. He married Isabella Helene. James and Margaret Leeper listed are my 6th ggrandparents. I also believe that my Armstrongs are in these families somewhere. What a mess. It's all so confusing. But piece by piece I think it will all fit. I'm copying this message and looking it over very thoroughly. Thanks for the great info.
