CAUTION! There is another Stephen Senter (b. abt. 1724, d. aft. 1804) that migrated from Virginia to North Carolina around the same time period (the mid to late 1700's), whose family also migrated to Tennessee. This other Stephen Senter was the father of Henry Senter (b. 1760, d. 1832, Greene County, TN) and William Senter (b. bef. 1761), among others. The other Stephen Senter is often refered to as "Stephen Senter of Dobbs and Cumberland County, North Carolina", and should not be confused with this Stephen Senter, refered to as "Stephen Senter of Bedford County, Virginia", to distinguish between the two. Some internet genealogies have accidentally confused or combined the two. There is no apparent relationship between the two Stephen Senters, according to most researchers.

Stephen Senter, Bedford Co., VA, 1700s Posted by: Howard Kelley Date: October 07, 1999 at 08:04:56

 of 111

There is a Stephen Senter who acquired 300 acres in Henry Co., VA, 31 Aug 1789, on both sides of Back Creek. Apparently the same Stephen Senter later acquired, 29 Jun 1793, 60 acres in Henry Co., VA, on Paul's Creek.

Later, 17 Aug 1797, Stephen Senter acquired 43 acres in Patrick Co., VA on East waters of Paul's Creek, adjoining his own land. I assume Patrick County was formed from part of Henry County between 29 Jun 1793 and 17 Aug 1797.

Is this the Stephen Senter who was born in Bedford Co., VA and died in Grainger Co., TN?

Marriage Bonds in Bedford County, Virginia (from VA Genweb):

SENTER

Oct. 14, 1782; George Key & Mary Senter; Zachariah Davis, Surety; Married by William Johnson, Oct. 14, 1782.

Jan. 28, 1792; Elijah Barton & Anna Senter; David Barton, Surety; Consent of John and Elizabeth Senter; Married by Joseph Drury, Jan. 28, 1792.

Children of STEPHEN SENTER and SUSANNAH ???? are:

  • i. ABNER?2 CENTER, b. Abt. 1755, Prob. Virginia4; d. Bet. 1830 - 18404; m. ELENDER PRUITT, Abt. 17734; b. Abt. 1754; d. Bet. 1850 - 1860.

Notes for ABNER? CENTER: Abner Center is LIKELY a son of Stephen and Susannah Senter of Bedford County, Virginia. He is said to have been born in Surry County, North Carolina, and although Stephen Senter was not to have been known to be in Surry County, North Carolina, he DID have records in Patrick and Henry County, Virginia, which were adjacent to Surry County, North Carolina. More research is necessary to conslusively prove Abner Center as a son of Stephen and Susannah Senter, but based upon most credible evidence, it appears likely to be true.

From "Tennessee Cousins" by Worth S. Ray, pg. 461:

Abner Senter, aged 25, 5ft. 4 in., born in Surry County, North Carolina (He was no doubt a brother of Milton and Tandy Senter, though not mentioned in the family History). The Senter family came from Grainger County, Tennessee to Roane County - but evidently came there from Surry County, North Carolina.

  • ii. TABITHA SENTER, b. Bef. 1759, Prob. Virginia; d. Aft. 1832, Possibly in White County, Tennessee; m. JAMES CHARLES, Abt. 17755; b. Abt. 1750; d. 10 Apr 1819.

JC-JAMES CHARLES (c1750-1818 White Co TN) was married to Tabiatha (probably SENTER). I have been unable to find the parents or siblings of James Charles or a marriage record. My belief that Tabitha was Stephen Senter's daughter is based on a suit James Charles brought against Stephen Senter's (died 1799) sons to produce his will, Tabitha Charles participation in a Senter lawsuit in 1793, and the continued proximity of the Charles and Senter families, and the use of 'Senter' for their children's name. Was Tabitha the mother of all the children? She was listed as over 45 on the 1820 Census. She called Solomon (born c1795) "my Son". If she were on the 1830 census with Solomon (as male), she was born between 1750 and 1760 and could have been the mother of all the children. I believe she was. Her husband, James, named all the children in his 1805 deed in Hawkins County. If this had been to secure the rights of the children of a first wife to their inheritance, he would not have named Solomon. The deed probably had some connection with Stephen Senter's death.

There were 12 children named in James Charles' wills:

JC-1 James Charles (1775-1860) married Dorcas Miller. Hawkins TN JC-A Cynthia Charles (c1775-before 1830) married John Miller. Hawkins Co TN. JC-2 Oliver Charles (1777 VA-1844) married Janee Birdwell. Jackson ALa, Polk, Warren and McMinn TN JC-B Susannah Charles (c1779) married Mr May. (James of Thomas of White Co?) Residence unknown. JC-3 Hiram Charles (c 1780-) married Sally Burum. Hawkins, TN. JC-C Nancy Charles (C1782) married Mr Young. Residence unknown. JC-4 Stephen Charles (C1783-) married Mary Knowles. White TN JC-D Elizabeth Charles (c1785) married Mr Woodlee. Residence unknown. JC-5 JOHN CHARLES (c 1787-1860) married Susan Groves. Hawkins TN. JC-6 Joel (John) Charles (c1793). White TN JC_E Tabitha Charles (c1794). White Co TN JC-7 Solomon Charles (c1795-1860) married Mary P. White Co TN

I have found records for James Charles in Henry and Patrick Co Va and in Hawkins and White Co and Warren Co TN. James Charles was in living in Henry Co Virginia by 30 August 1777 when he took the oath of allegiance. (John Senter refused the oath and was taxed double.)

Have James in Henry Co. VA-----1777 to about 1790.......then Patrick Co. Figure Patrick was from Henry, so probably didn't move.....just a new county formed.......about 1794 he was in Hawkins Co. Tn. this is land records and other misc. records found.

In 1805 he made a Conveyance to his children in Hawkins Co. 1809 tax in Hawkins....236 acres. 1810 he has court precedings about estate of Stephen Senter.

1814 in Franklin co. Tn. tax.......or at least we think that is ours. 1815 James was the highest bidder and bough land in Warren Co. 1815 in White Co. 1817 land sold to him. 1818 deed registered.

1820.....census.....Tabitha is head of household and no James. 1832 she deeds land to Solomon. So we figure he died c1819 in white Co.....but nothing really done until around 1830. His will is in the 1831-1841 book, pg 47 White Co. Tn. He gave every thing to Tabitha.......and lists all the kids and they got $1.00.

Not sure where he died.....nor is buried......nor when Tabitha died and is buried. Hope you can help me there.

That is a short summary of what we have. I have 12-15 pages of material.......land,court and etc records. Too much to type this way.

Can you fill in any more. I'm sorry.....but I get real involved in all of the. Not happy with my straight line.....old nosey me......I want to know all about all of them.

I saw the messages on Genforum. Thanks. Let me hear from you. jgk

Friends and Family, Last night while reading Tennessee Cousins by Worth Ray, I found in the section on Jefferson County under the heading of Jefferson County marriages, on page 121, the following citation: "William Tandy Senter married Elizabeth _ _ _ _ _ _ about 1800." Have any of you run across this before, or do you have any ideas to share?

Notes for ISAAC RICE, SR.: From "The History of Roane County, Tennessee" by Emma Middleton Wells:, pg. 45:

Among the early settlers who came into the lands bought of the Cherokee Indians on the West side of the Tennessee River after the treaty of the Tellico in 1805, there was a group from Hawkins County, and among there Isaac Rice appears to have been the leader. Isaac Rice, William Matlock and Joseph Mee, with their families settled on "The waters of King's Creek". Isaac Rice built a log cabin on a small hill above the spring that now supplies water to Rockwood. William Matlock, brother-in-law of Rice, and Joseph Mee, built cabins nesrby, and these three built a log cabin church house and organized a church membership about 1812.

It appears that Rice had learned new ideas and teachings of the gospel back in his home in Hawkins County or other sources, his instructors most likely being representatives of the movement that had organized from the preaching of Barton W. Stone. The enthusiasm and energy of Mr. Rice in preaching his views brought a good number of converts, but it also aroused the opposition of others.

In a few years the Church house was burned and the preacher Isaac Rice moved to McMinn County, to a place now called Riceville, and this left membership to drift for some time. Major John Smith bought land near Post Oak Springs, and though he was not a preacher, he became the leader of the work and would call the members together under some large oak trees, and have singing and prayer.
