Morrow DNA Group 5 (George PA)
These matches all have a connection to either George Morrow, born in eastern Pennsylvania and died in 1790 in Abbeville, SC, or Pennsylvania more broadly. Recently surfaced research has identified connections between several of them, but more tests--and upgrades among existing tests--would be useful.
George and his brothers
- George Morrow 1742-1790, Abbeville, SC: Four participants descended from the two wives of George Morrow (sons John and Hugh) match at 25 or 37 markers. George was born about 1742 on the Pennsylvania/Maryland border and died in 1790 in Abbeville, SC. He is often listed as a son of "Old Sam of Spartanburg," but these DNA results disprove that relationship.
- James Morrow 1731-1788, of Abbeville, SC is found with William Morrow in Orange Co, NC, before he moved south alongside George, above. They both bought land in Georgia, then Abbeville, SC. James married Margaret Berry. His only known son was John Morrow of Hickman Co, KY, b. abt 1777 in SC, m. Jane, likely Burgess (not Garvin). His estate was administered by Thomas Morrow--presumed to be Thomas, son of Samuel, because he was joined by his brothers-in-law James Foster and Fleming Bates. [Predicted common ancestor based on 65/67 marker match = b. 1708]
- William Morrow m. Rachel Reed (1728-1780) settled in Orange Co, NC by about 1758, by way of Pennsylvania. He was killed in a skirmish in 1780 along with his son Hugh. Hugh left behind a young son James Morrow b abt 1780 d. 1845 in Fayette Co, IN. [More tests needed to solidify this line, as it is only one tester, but the match is 109/111 and 66/67 to James and George, respectively]
- Samuel Morrow of Long Cane (d. 1780), Abbeville Co, SC, is said to be the father of Thomas Morrow m. Janet McCarter. Thomas is found in Abbeville, SC until about 1809, when he purchase substantial land in Logan County, KY. His son Moses in turn deeded land to his son George H. Morrow, b. 1825 of Paducah Co, KY. (George and John N's son John Smith were contemporaries in in Paducah. [67/67 match to James/John N. above, so predicted common ancestor born in early 1800s.] [109/111 match with William/James line, also predicted common ancestor early 1800s.] Note Samuel's existence is premised on a family letter, and may be fictional. Historical records fit James better.
Looser Matches
- William Morrow d. 1830 in Pennsylvania, m. Barbara Zantzinger, grandfather of Gov. Edwin Porch Morrow [Line is more distantly related - average common ancestor ~1450, but range is wide]
- Lafayette Blair Morrow b. 1831 Ohio m. Cynthia Hoyt [average common ancestor ~1500]
- Gawen Morrow (1729-1805), son of William, of Lurgan Two, Franklin Co, PA. This demonstrates this line is not connected to the John Morrow d. 1710 in Franklin Co, PA (Group 3). Match is relatively loose, but only 37 markers tested.
