Morrow DNA Group 3 (PA/SC)

Original name "Georgia", but the Georgia connections have mostly disappeared.

The bulk of this group at present consists of descendants of John Morrow, b. about 1710, believed to be Ulster, Ireland, who m. Mary and settled in Franklin Co, PA. There are 5 John of PA known descendants in the project - 3 descendants of John > Thomas > Thomas and 2 descendants of John > Thomas > William (his brother). As one would expect, the Thomas/Thomas descendants all match slightly more closely to each other than to the William line, but it's all consistent with a common ancestor ~200 years ago.

Because all of these participants are from Thomas's line, additional participants from other parts of the family would help demonstrate the connection to John. However, as noted below, the matches found thus far are consistent with other sons' lines.

There are 4 tested lines matching the above participants (and a participant of an unknown line who matches 12/12 but has not upgraded).

  • Ephraim Morrow, b. 1822 Georgia. There's a theory posted here that traces him as son of James son of James son of John 1710. The DNA match is close enough at 67 markers to support that, but more collateral descendants would help confirm.
  • Allen Morrow, b. 1800 KY m. Nancy Biggs. She was allegedly born in Georgia, but they were in Missouri before 1840 and so are hard to trace. DNA match is 25/25, which supports a connection within ~300 years, but the person hasn't tested more to narrow down.
  • William Morrow b. about 1760, maybe NC, m. Lydia Watts and first found in Wayne Co, TN. Family story is that he's son of William, an Irish Immigrant (but they're always Irish immigrants). Match is a little further than the John lines. He would have been a contemporary of John's sons and grandsons, several of whom went to Tennessee.
  • Hugh Morrow d. 1902 Australia. He may have been born in Franklin Co, PA, which suggests a pretty close relationship with the John line, although the match is more distant than the others.

Of note: Descendant of Gawen Morrow d. 1805 m. Margaret Murphy--who also lived in Franklin County, PA at the same time as John and is listed as his son in some quarters--does not match this group. See Group 5.
