George Hornet was born on 26th March 1739 and baptised six days later at Shephall in Hertfordshire, son of Elizabeth Hornet, formerly Warner, and her husband Benjamin Hornet.

On 23rd November 1762, aged 23, George married Mary Mailes at Codicote, about four miles south-west of Shephall. Their first son, James, was baptised nine months later, also at Codicote. They then moved a short distance to the neighbouring parish of Welwyn, where they had a further ten children baptised between 1767 and 1785. Three of the couple's eleven children died young. In Welwyn, George was described as a labourer.

George lived to see at least 24 grandchildren born in his lifetime. His first known grandchild was born in 1788, when George was 49 years old.

George died aged 73. He was buried on 1st April 1812 at Welwyn. His daughter Elizabeth had a child baptised eleven days later, who was given the name George. Mary survived George by thirteen years.

George the Son of Benjamin Hornet and Elizabeth his Wife was born March the 26th 1739 and baptized April the 1st 1739

Whilst no named connection has been found, this baptism has been identified on the basis that when George married in 1762 at Codicote he was described as being "of Graveley" which is the parish where this George's parents had married. Shephall lies between Graveley and Codicote where George married.
