Facts and Events
Catherine Hornet was baptised on 23rd November 1768 at Welwyn in Hertfordshire, daughter of Mary Hornet, formerly Mailes, and her husband George Hornet, a labourer.
On 24th November 1787, aged 19, she married a Nathaniel Haggar at Welwyn. He was from the neighbouring parish of Knebworth. They went on to have five children together baptised t Welwyn between 1788 and 1798. Her husband Nathaniel was one of the witnesses to her brother John Hornet's marriage in 1791 in the neighbouring parish of Kimpton.
Catherine's father died in 1812, and her mother in 1825.
By 1832, the family was living at Potter's Heath Farm in Welwyn, when Nathaniel was listed in polling lists. He was later described as a yeoman.
Nathaniel died in 1836, aged 69. He left a will under which Catherine inherited his estate for her lifetime, after which it was to be split among their children and a grandchild. By the time of the 1841 census Catherine was living with her daughter Elizabeth Ashby's family at Lockley Farm in Digswell, where her son-in-law Stephen Ashby was bailiff.
Catherine later moved a few miles south-west to the town of St Albans, where she died in 1842, aged 73. She was buried at Knebworth on 11th March 1842.
