Sarah Hornet was baptised on 19th September 1779 at Welwyn in Hertfordshire, daughter of Mary Hornet, formerly Mailes, and her husband George Hornet, a labourer.

On 23rd September 1809, aged 30, Sarah married a rope maker called George Dawson. He was about seven years younger than her. For the first few years after their marriage they lived in Welwyn, having four children baptised there between 1810 and 1821.[5] Sarah's father died in 1812, and her mother died in 1825.

Some time between 1821 and 1841 the family left Welwyn and moved about ten miles south-west to the town of St Albans. The 1841 census finds Sarah and George living at Spencer Street there, with their two youngest children.

Sarah died in 1846, aged 67. She was buried in the parish of St Peter in St Albans on 4th October 1846. George survived her by 23 years.

  5. The baptism of their fourth child, Caroline Matilda, in 1821 gives her parents' names as John and Sarah rather than George and Sarah, but this appears to be an error. Her father's occupation on the baptism is given as rope maker, whilst no other baptisms for children of John and Sarah Dawson have been found in Welwyn at this time. Caroline appears with George and Sarah in the 1841 census, and when she married in 1845 in St Pancras she gave her father's name as "George Dawson, Licensed Victualler". Caroline subsequently appears in the 1851 census with her husband William Gardner in Westminster giving her place of birth as "Welwin".
