Facts and Events
Elizabeth Hornet was baptised on 2nd June 1775 at Welwyn in Hertfordshire, daughter of Mary Hornet, formerly Mailes, and her husband George Hornet, a labourer. Elizabeth was married on 30th July 1797 at the neighbouring parish of Ayot St Lawrence to a labourer named William Ashby. Between 1798 and 1822 they had nine children baptised at Ayot St Lawrence; Elizabeth was 46 by the time the youngest was born. Some of the children's baptisms note that the family actually lived in Kimpton parish rather than Ayot St Lawrence. Probably they lived close to the border between the two parishes and found Ayot St Lawrence church more convenient. Back in Welwyn, Elizabeth's father died in 1812 and her mother died in 1825. Elizabeth died at the age of 53 and was buried at Ayot St Lawrence on 30th October 1828. Her youngest two children then went to live with their aunt Mary Hornet, who was Elizabeth's brother John's widow. William outlived Elizabeth by nineteen years. References
