Information on John Davis in Augusta County, VA
NOTE: The original records for this page were consolidated and belonged to other Davis men of Augusta. I have done my best to extract the records that did not belong on this page.
John's wife's name is Eleanor per Augusta County court records and based on depositions naming son Samuel Davis [see below]. There is a record in Kegley's Virginia Frontier, p. 340 for William Davis wherein it states William Davis moves to the Forks "adjoining the widow Davis" but no first name is provided for his mother:
- "William Davis survey for 100 acres adjoining the widow Davis in Forks of James"
This John Davis could be related to Robert Davis of Back Creek, in the Beverley Manor, based solely on proximity in Augusta County, Virginia. Although they're both listed as neighboring William King, there are no records that confirms a relationship between John Davis & Robert Davis of Beverley Manor. Robert Davis moves from the Back Creek, in the Beverley Manor, to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina c1756 at the same time, John Davis moves to the Forks of the James. According to Virginia magazine of history and biography: Virginia. History Records, page 194 "There seems to have been a general exodus in the early 1750's from the Beverley Manor neighborhood" with numerous neighboring families selling out and removing to the Waxhaw settlement of NC/SC and/or to the Borden Grant and lands south of the Borden Grant.
Also neighboring William King & Robert Davis was David Davis of the Calfpasture to Mossy Creek, North River Shanandoah. David Davis was the first to move from Beverley Manor as he is found patenting lands on Mossy Creek c1741. No deeds or records are located that ties together David, Robert & John except that all three Davis men owned lands neighboring William King per the 1745-46 Augusta Road Orders as found AUGUSTA COUNTY ROAD ORDERS 1745-1769:
- 11 February 1745 O. S., p. 8 -- Ordered that William Smith and Robert Gay be Overseers from David Davis Mill to the top of the Mountain above William Kings and it is ordered that they clear the same according to Law.
