Lease and release for ₤17.2. - 570 acres, part of Manner Beverley in Augusta County... by a spring... (signed) W. Beverley. Wit: G. Home, John Lewis, Jas. Caldwell. 22 Feb. 1739 [1739]. Acknowledged by William Beverley, Gent. [Orange County Virginia Deed Book 3, Dorman, pg. 8].
  • Pages 347-39. 23 June 1743. Richd. Winslow, Gent., Sheriff of Orange County, to James Davis of that part of the said county called Augusta. For £20. Isaac Smith of Orange County at a Court held 25 Feb. 1742 recovered against Gibbon Jennings late of that part of Orange County called Augusta £17.18.1 with interest. The Sheriff entered upon 375 acres at Sherindo (Shenandoah) of which Jennings was seized and gave publick auction, at which time of sale James Davis was the highest bidder having offered £20 current money which was the best price could be gotten. Processioning List of 1755

"Processioning" was the process or periodically reviewing and agreeing upon property lines between settlers. Processioning Lists can be useful in determining the area of a settler and the neighboring settlers at a specific time period:

  • There are 2 Davis families in the area of Augusta that later became Rockbridge. You can differentiate between the two families based on location. This Davis family was SW Borden, between the James River/North River and the Buffalo and was located at A-6 on the Borden Map, whereas the other Davis family was C-5 on the Borden Map, North River to the Beverley Manor line to the Great Road [by Isaac Taylor's plantation]
