  • Oldest brother John distributing lands of James Davis Sr to siblings:
Samuel Davis from John Davis, £10, 400 acres on branches of Buffalo Creek, cor. Richard Wood [Augusta Deed Book 15; 398]
  • September 8, 1769. John Willey and Elizabeth his wife to Samuel Davis. 10 pounds. 280 acres at the head of Buffalo Creek. Witnesses: James Davis, Adam Wallace, Peter Wallace [Deed Book 1, Page 13]

Notes for Samuel Davis

  • Witnessed the deed of brother James Davis:
Page 374.— 30th May, 1769. John Davis, of Rowan County, North Carolina, to James Davis, of Forks of James, £62, 436 acres in Forks of James; corner William McKee's, formerly William Todd's land; corner Borden's tract, Robert Young's line, branch of Buffalo Creek; Hugh Cunningham's line, formerly Low Todd's; corner Peter Wallace. Teste: Samuel Wilson, James McMath. Archebeld McCurey [s/b McClure], Samuel Davis
  • Samuel Davis lived in the region of Augusta that became Botetourt in 1770. Rockbridge County was created in 177when it was carved out of Augusta and Botetourt counties, with Kerr's Creek being the boundary line. Those living south of Kerrs Creek were thrown into Botetourt County upon its formation. Those living north of Kerrs Creek were then thrown into Rockbridge County upon its formation; thus it behooves researchers to check all three counties for records as the area changed jurisdiction three times in a span of less than ten years.
  • per 6 Sep 1849 letter from Samuel Daveiss, Harrodsburg to nephew James H Daveiss, Georgetown says James Davis, b Ireland, sons: James d 1816 Lincoln Co KY, Joseph D d 1795, Samuel d Feb 1794 Crab Orchard KY & John lived NC, arrived from VA Fall 1779
  • Samuel Davis moved to Lincoln County, KY in the Fall of 1779. A biography in Collins "History of Kentucky" under "Historical Sketches" p 403-05 states "Samuel Davis moved here from Bedford Co VA in 1779".
Samuel was residing in Augusta County, VA when Botetourt County was created in 1770. Samuel Davis first moved to Bedford prior to removing to Lincoln County, KY. Samuel, and his brother Joseph Davis, followed the Marshall family to Bedford County, VA c1773 as evidence by deeds; it was stated "of Bedford VA" when they sold their Buffalo Creek properties
  • At April term 1779 of County Court, Samuel Davis was appointed Deputy Surveyor; per Collins "History of Kentucky" Vol 2, page 476

Per online genealogies, "Samuel Davis was supposedly born in Bedford Co VA about 1753" however his family was residing in Augusta so the reference to Bedford is unsubstantiated as is the date of birth of 1753 - was lieutenant in Capt. John Boyle's company in Lincoln County Kentucky - he died on his land at Gilmore's Lick, Lincoln County, Kentucky May 8, 1783 at 40 years of age - his will was filed in Lincoln County KY in Will Book B, page 211- he left his Mansion house on the Crab Orchard tract to wife, Jane Davis "where she now lives."
