Sarah Jane Lewis was born on 7th August 1847 at Aspley Guise in Bedfordshire, daughter of Sarah Lewis, formerly Cook, and her husband Thomas Lewis, a victualler. She was the ninth of fifteen children. Some time between 1849 and 1851 the family left Aspley Guise, where Thomas had been landlord of The Swan public house, and moved to Little Brickhill in Buckinghamshire, where Thomas became landlord of The King's Arms public house. Sarah appears in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses living with her parents and siblings at Little Brickhill.

By 1871, Sarah had moved to London and was working as a district nurse at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington.

By 1880, she had married a horse dealer named Peter Allen. They appear to have had four children together between 1880 and 1885. The 1891 and 1901 censuses find them living at Adpar Mews in Paddington. Peter died in 1905, aged 56. The 1911 census finds Sarah living with her daughter Alice (who had also been widowed by then) in Marylebone.

In September 1919, Sarah was mentioned in her son Thomas's army records as living at 39 Exeter Street in Marylebone.

Sarah died later that year, on 7th November 1919 at her daughter Alice's home at 7 Windsor Buildings on Horace Street (which reverted to its old name of Cato Street in the 1930s) in Marylebone. She died due to shock caused by fracturing the neck of her right thigh bone. She was 72 years old.
