Samuel Lewis was baptised on 28th November 1835 at Husborne Crawley in Bedfordshire, son of Sarah (or Sally) Lewis, formerly Cook, and her husband Thomas Lewis, a pig dealer and publican. By 1841 the family had left Husborne Crawley and moved to the nearby village of Aspley Guise, where they ran the Swan public house on West Street. They moved again between 1849 and 1850 to the King's Arms at Little Brickhill.

At the time of the 1851 census Samuel was working as an apprentice to a baker at Great Brickhill. By 1861 he had returned to live with his parents at the King's Arms in Little Brickhill and was himself working as a baker. A couple of months

Shortly after the 1861 census Samuel moved to London. He married at Lambeth in London's southern suburbs on 20th June 1861, aged 25, to Mary Ann Greening. Before their marriage she had been living at Leighton Buzzard, five miles south of Little Brickhill. At the time of their marriage Samuel was living on Lambeth Walk in Lambeth. It would appear that they returned to Little Brickhill after their marriage, where Samuel went bankrupt in December 1862.

Samuel and Mary's first child was born the following year in Leighton Buzzard, which may indicate that they lived with her parents for a time.

By 1867 Samuel and Mary had returned to London, settling in Islington, where Samuel worked as a cab driver. They had three children there between 1867 and 1872. They also appear to have adopted a girl called Ethel Wilson, born about 1878, who appears living with them in 1881 described as a visitor, but by 1891 was being described as their daughter Ethel Lewis.[11] In both the 1871 and 1881 censuses Samuel, Mary and their children were living on Frederick Street in Islington.

Samuel's parents had left Little Brickhill and moved to Luton in the 1860s. His mother died there in August 1890 and his father died there less than a year later, in June 1891.

By 1891 Samuela and Mary had moved to 5 Nailour Street, also in Islington, and they had a Harry Lewis living with them, who described was a boarder. He may have been a relative of Samuel's, but the connection is not obvious. The family was still at 5 Nailour Street in 1901, which was said to have four rooms.

In 1911, Samuel and Mary were living at 24 Roman Road in the Barnsbury area of Islington. They were living in two rooms there, and had their son William living with them. Mary reported that she had had five children, four of whom were still living. Whether she was counting Ethel as one of her children is unclear. There was also a Sarah Lewis born about 1865 who had lived with Samuel's parents in Luton described as their granddaughter and who gave her place of birth as Islington - no obvious birth has been found for her, so she could be another candidate for Samuel and Mary's fifth child.

Mary died in 1921, aged 82. Samuel survived her by just over a year. He died in 1923 in Islington, aged 87.
