Ann Elizabeth Lewis was born in 1857 at Little Brickhill in Buckinghamshire, daughter of Sarah Lewis, formerly Cook, and her husband Thomas Lewis, a publican. The family ran the King's Arms at Little Brickhill, and Ann appears in the 1861 census living there with her parents and siblings. Ann was the youngest of a remarkable fifteen children, although several of her older siblings had died young before Ann was born.
The family moved to Luton in the 1860s, initially to run the Shepherd and Flock public house. By 1871 the family was living at 4 Burr Street and Ann was working as a sewer.
On 29th May 1876 Ann was married in Luton to Henry Saunders. Ann used her middle name when she married, signing herself simply as "Elizabeth Lewis". Ann and Henry did not have any children.
Both the 1881 and 1891 censuses find them living on Hitchin Road. Henry worked as a straw hat blocker, whilst Ann was a straw plait machinist. In 1891 they had Ann's niece Beatrice Allen (her sister Sarah's daughter) living with them. Ann's mother died in 1890 and her father died in 1891.
By 1901 Henry and Ann had moved to Windmill Street. Henry's older brother was living with them too, as well as a boarder.
Some time between 1901 and 1909 they moved to 17 York Street. Henry died there on 30th July 1909, aged 56. Ann survived him by nearly 28 years. She died in 1937, aged 79.
