Ellen Lewis was born in 1852 at Little Brickhill in Buckinghamshire, daughter of Sarah Lewis, formerly Cook, and her husband Thomas Lewis, a publican. Ellen was baptised on 13th September 1852 at Husborne Crawley, where her parents had lived a few years earlier. Ellen appears in the 1861 census living with her parents and siblings at the King's Arms in Little Brickhill.

Ellen has yet to be traced after 1861.[4]

    It is considered the mother's name of Susan is an error - it is clear from the censuses and the other children of this family that the mother was called Sarah or Sally.

    There is a note in the margin against this baptism saying "Parents / Ann Fleet". Similar notes appear against several baptisms around this time - they appear to be recording the child's godparents.
