Alfred Lewis was baptised on 15th February 1837 at Husborne Crawley in Bedfordshire, son of Sarah (or Sally) Lewis, formerly Cook, and her husband Thomas Lewis, a pig dealer and publican. By 1841 the family had moved to the nearby village of Aspley Guise, where Alfred's parents ran the Swan public house on West Street. They moved again around 1849/50 to Little Brickhill in Buckinghamshire, to take over the King's Arms public house there.

On 17th October 1860 Alfred married Elizabth Acome at Little Brickhill. She was originally from Waddesdon, but had been working as a servant in Stony Stratford, near Little Brickhill, before their marriage. After their marriage they initially lived at Little Brickhill, appearing there in the 1861 census and having their first child there later that year. At the time of the 1861 census, Alfred was working as a shoemaker.

Some time between 1861 and 1865 they moved from Little Brickhill to the neighbouring town of Fenny Stratford, where they took over the King's Head public house on the High Street, with Alfred becoming a publican like his father. Alfred and Elizabeth had another six children born at Fenny Stratford between 1865 and 1878. The 1871 census finds the family living at the King's Head along with several boarders. Elizabeth was working as a dressmaker at this time.

Alfred died in 1878, aged 41, shortly after their youngest daughter had been born. Alfred's parents both survived him. Elizabeth outlived Alfred by over 41 years, running the King's Head herself for a few years after his death.

Although baptised as "Samuel Alfred", in all other records he was simply known as Alfred. As his parents already had a son called Samuel, it seems unlikely that they would have deliberately had two sons with the same first name; perhaps his given name was misrecorded on his baptism record.
