Mary Ann Greening was born in 1838 at Wilstone in the parish of Tring, Hertfordshire, daughter of Sarah Greening, formerly Clark, and her husband William Greening, a publican. Mary appears in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living at Wilstone with her parents and siblings. In 1851 she was working as a straw plaiter. Some time between 1851 and 1861 the family left Wilstone and moved about nine miles north to the town of Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, where they ran over the Cross Keys public house in the centre of the town. Mary appears in the 1861 census there with her parents, siblings and several lodgers.

Shortly after the 1861 census Mary moved to London. She married at Lambeth in London's southern suburbs on 20th June 1861, aged 23, to Samuel Lewis, a baker. Before their marriage he had been living at Little Brickhill, five miles north of Leighton Buzzard. Their first child was born in 1863 at Leighton Buzzard, which may indicate that they lived with her parents for a time after their marriage. It would appear that Samuel went bankrupt in 1862.

By 1867 Mary and Samuel had returned to London, settling in Islington, where Samuel worked as a cab driver. They had three children there between 1867 and 1872. They also appear to have adopted a girl called Ethel Wilson, born about 1878, who appears living with them in 1881 described as a visitor, but by 1891 was being described as their daughter Ethel Lewis.[11] In both the 1871 and 1881 censuses Mary, Samuel and their children were living on Frederick Street in Islington.

By 1891 they had moved to 5 Nailour Street, also in Islington, and they had a Harry Lewis living with them, who described was a boarder. He may have been a relative of Samuel's, but the connection is not obvious. The family was still at 5 Nailour Street in 1901, which was said to have four rooms.

In 1911, Mary and Samuel were living at 24 Roman Road in the Barnsbury area of Islington. They were living in two rooms there, and had their son William living with them. Mary reported that she had had five children, four of whom were still living. Whether she was counting Ethel as one of her children is unclear. There was also a Sarah Lewis born about 1865 who had lived with Samuel's parents in Luton described as their granddaughter and who gave her place of birth as Islington - no obvious birth has been found for her, so she could be another candidate for Mary and Samuel's fifth child.

Mary died in 1921, aged 82. Samuel survived her by just over a year.
