Facts and Events
Thomas James Allen was born on 26th November 1885 at Marylebone, in the western suburbs of London, son of Sarah Jane Allen, formerly Lewis, and her husband Peter Henry Allen, a horse dealer. He was the youngest of their four children. Thomas appears in both the 1891 and 1901 censuses living with his parents and siblings at Adpar Mews in Paddington. Thomas's father died in 1905.
In 1915, with the Great War underway, Thomas joined the army. His service records tell us that he was a horse keeper and was not married. He appears to have been living with his mother in Marylebone before joining up. He initially served as a private in the 9th Bedfordshire Regiment, before transferring to the Labour Corps in March 1916, where he continued to serve until demobilised in 1919. The records also show that Thomas was still alive in 1939, when he contacted the war office to obtain a copy of his discharge papers. At that time he was living at 16 Winsdor Buildings, Cato Street, Marylebone, and he also appears in the electoral rolls there that year, living with a Peter Curtis, who was probably related to his brother-in-law - Thomas's sister Alice and her husband Peter Curtis also lived at Windsor Buildings.
After the war, Thomas appears to have lived with his sister Alice and others at 30 Delamere Street in Paddington. Alice died in 1956. Thomas appears to have still been at 30 Delamere Street in 1959, by which time he would have been 74. He has yet to be traced after 1959.
